So, there were a few factors I liked about Rival, but as much as I enjoyed - I didn't like. I was excited for this story and thought it would be one I couldn't possibly not enjoy, but it honestly did not read like Bully or Until You and I'm at a loss for why.

Madoc ruined this for me. I know they are teens, but come on, Penelope Douglas is the queen of writing teens adult-like. Well, Madoc for sure acted like a teenager. Called a girl fat - ugh, so annoying. Who does that but an immature boy? And then he slides down the bowling lane on his stomach, and his dialogue felt just really immature at times. I didn't enjoy him.

Then the plot. This felt like a soap opera. I love drama to a certain point. It often brings the perfect conflict I enjoy, but I didn't connect with any of the stuff happening. Embarrassing his step-sister and then going and singing karaoke like it's a comeback? What? I was honestly confused.

I think there comes a time where you don't click with a book, and that happened here.

I did enjoy Fallon and Madoc's banter and their tension-filled relationship. Some scenes were pretty steamy - but there were too many. I had to skip through some of their intimate times like this was Fifty Shades or something.

I didn't love this one. And I'm unsure if I'll be reading the next in the series. But I wouldn't discourage someone from reading it if they enjoy love-hate and teenage drama.

Rival Fall Away Book 2 edition by Penelope Douglas Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I really liked Bully. I didn’t like a couple of aspects but that’s to be expected. If there wasn’t conflict there would be no story. But I don’t understand the directions the author went in this sorry.
Warning... some light Spoilers ahead.
At least one the main characters in Bully got together there was no one else. In this book the female lead was of course virginal and pure while the man slept with everything. I don’t get why some authors take their story here? Sex is great, people can have sex, but this is supposed to be romantic. How is a detailed blow by a random chick, in the middle of their romance helpful? That is truly the number one thing I hate in one of these novels. The man is a slut... Ok but once he is in “love” he should keep it in his pants or he’s a POS. I HATE getting attached to a character and the watching him become a sleaze... I don’t get the point. I can’t even count the number of women that the H hooked up with on this book. We learned of Fallon going through hell with a miscarriage and suicide attempt, and find that she tried to go and see Madoc only to find him get a blow job in a hot tub from some random slut. How does that add to the story? And through all of this she returns to him every time. He doesn’t chase her ever. Even in just internal dialogue he reveals that he doesn’t love her over and over. In hers she repeatedly reveals that she loves him and he basically destroyed her. Yet he forces her to come to him every time. Instead of a happy satisfying ending, I feel nauseated. With just a few changes this would have been an awesome book. Instead it’s another weak virginal girl who ends up with the jerk who screwed probably a hundred women while supposedly in love with her. Yay... because there aren’t enough of those on . I am glad I skipped ahead and read the reviews for the next book. The author was so desperate to whore out her characters she has two characters who already had their HEA break up for two years (and sleep with other people of course) so that she can contrive a stupid scenario to get them back together. That ruins the first book for me, because the characters she created in that story wouldn’t do this. But the characters can always be manipulated to earn the author more money! So disappointed by the whole thing. I would have bought all of the books on the
Series is not for this trash, and now I am returning this book. I wish there was a place that authors posted polls about plot lines. I’d really love to see the woman who says “yes please, when I read a novel I like to see the two love interest having sex with as many people as possible”. There’s already a genre for that, it’s called erotica.
Lies, secrets and manipulation from your own parents...not how it was supposed to be.

Madoc got himself a new step sister when his father re-married. They were not raised together, nor did they act like family. Butting heads or totally ignoring one another was their thing...until attraction won out.

Fallon liked to keep to herself, do her own thing, and skateboard. That was her thing. And then when Madoc came into her life...things got complicated.

With parents that were focused on image, step children who had an undeniable attraction was not part of the plan. So, they sent Fallon away to boarding school.

It's been two years and she's back. Ready to get some answers and get some revenge for banishing her. However, things aren't always what they seem, feelings don't just disappear and sometimes making the people that hurt you feel worse than you do is all you strive for.

We get to know Madoc and where he comes from and what makes him who he is. This was a page turner for me because I just had to know how things ended for these two. Such a tangled web. I enjoy their continued friendships and their back and forth. Fallon is strong because her father forced her to be, but it served her well. Their connection was strong and their chemistry was HOT! They were never truly related but they were meant to be family because a love like theirs, love you are willing to sacrifice anything for, is worth EVERYTHING.
